OPENING POST, December 15, 2007
So, here I am, at 66, venturing into the world of bloggers, since that is the in thing and I don't want to be left behind. Or, since I want to leave behind something:)
That brings me to the topic of the new year. Everybody will be sending Happy New Year messages after two weeks. What is my message?
Let me look into my poetry archives. Here are the New Year poems that I have written.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, THROW ME A PENNY
Happy New Year I wish you all,
Enjoy and make merry.
Hold arm in arm and drink and dance,
Let there be no worry.
But while you ride high in the sky,
Spare a thought for the scum
Of earth, clad in their stinking rags,
Who dare not, near you, come.
But even from a distance you
Can glance at me and tell
That a penny thrown by you might
Buy me my next morsel.
I’m weak in body and spirit,
Bit by hunger and cold.
Even to make my begging round,
I am rather too old.
Yet I harbour a hope in my
This weather beaten breast:
That I would have mercy of those
Who are clad in their best.
